ITAP Week 5 - Reflective Visual Journal

Cultivate Reflective Practice

In my previous college I've been working on a costume project for History of Art and Design. We were asked to make a costume using 2 types of art styles. In this group project we at first chose Op Art and Pop Art.

The concept is about a celebrity, wanting to break free from all the fame that entangles them having no freedom. During the process we managed to head for Dadaism more than Pop Art. We had to make more research, and we had to attend some critique session to make sure we're on the right track. A lot of reflective session has to be done, and to make choose the best concept we at first have to have few other ideas. The outcome wasn't what we expected, how we put on the costume and the design of the costume changed not completely but a lot. We not only reflect on our work, but also on the team work, as we had some conflicts in between and some members are not cooperating. We tried our best to solve the problem and we managed to sit down quietly and communicate in an appropriate way.

[They tend to stray away from the light, hoping not to be seen]

[Being caged, hairs entangled, FAME written on the hand showing the FAME he holds. Finally a barbie doll's head on the finger based on Dadaism creating the scenery of the destroyed childhood, but he is still holding on. Along with the wire entangled on his feet, showing NO-FREEDOM]

[The armor looking suit that is so big and tight, so hard for one to bare, and the illusion giving a perfect image of celebrities possess. He however wants to break free and struggles hard to pull off.]

Its not easy to get everything together as group projects people have different ideas and one has to work hard on convincing the other. During the process we had to reflect back on how can we make this happen, as in how can we make the costume what sort of materials, what colors, what kind of technique. Of course some of our ideas failed we had to do it again, and we made samples to test. The make up was improved and improved. Repeat doing things until we get the right one.

Cyclic Design Process, Iteration.

For most of your project, you will have to go again few times. We get to somewhere we have no idea we could get there. This is through a cycle. Some people start thinking before plan, some start with plan, do or evaluate. No matter where you start, by the right way you'll still end up somewhere you never imagined. Going back to the cycle over and again allows you to improve your work and improve. Find out the weakness or problem, and improve it little by little until you're satisfied with it.

These are some examples of my progression for my work. I first start with thinking what I want and i plan how should I do it and then evaluate, see whether if its good enough or not.
